How to hide God’s Word in your heart (Psalm 91:2) Draw for Bible memory!

Psalm 91:2 has a very important lesson for us, and like all the Psalms, is so comforting and so informative! Drawing these verses helps us hide God’s word in our hearts so it becomes part of us and we can recall these precepts so the Holy Spirit can remind us of them at the opportune times.

Let’s dive into verse 2 for a minute before the video drawing lesson so we can extract some of the rich meaning from this verse.

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]

2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,

my God, in whom I trust.”

We see right off the bat, “I will say…”. At first blush, this may not seem like a big deal, but the writer is declaring what he will say, what his attitude will be!

This is important because we often feel captive to our thoughts and feelings, but when we make a decision to declare what we will think about, everything can change!

It starts in our head, and transfers to our heart!

We need to realize that emotions are fickle things that come and go like the wind, changing in a heartbeat, and are not always helpful, correct, or productive.

I love this cartoon so much, with the heart yelling at the brain to jump off the cliff. Isn't this so true? Emotions can feel so powerful, but not always what we should be listening to!

When we allow our mind to take charge and direct our thoughts towards positive, God-honoring things our feelings will follow! Did you know that?

This is critical for our children to understand. Feelings will bubble up, and that is OK! They happen and we observe them. We are humans created with feelings. But our brain can sift these feelings and decide if they are appropriate, productive, helpful, or hurtful.

We have an opportunity to declare, “I will say…” and lead our feelings down a different path if we so desire. It may not always be easy, but it is effective.

This writer says of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress…”. God is our shelter from danger, our protection from this world.

We often wonder why God allows us to suffer, yet the reality is sin entered the scene through Adam and Eve, and we suffer from a fallen world, but he is our refuge and fortress from this fallen world!

Let’s change our mindset and perspective to be in alignment with the Bible!

Our emotions can take over and tell us we are victims and everything is rotten, but when we declare, “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress”, we change the script, our mind, our emotions, thus changing our reality to the truth!

The end of verse two says, “…my God, in whom I trust”.

This would be like talking to a friend and saying, “My dad is awesome”! You indicate this particular dad belongs to you, he is yours.

In the same way, God is our God, we are in a relationship with him and he belongs to us and we belong to him! He is not just “God” out in the universe generic and obtuse. He is a personal, loving Father who adopts us as his children.

And lastly, the writer proclaims he trusts in God. So vital! God is reliable and his strength covers us like the wings of a bird. Verse four says:

If God is not reliable and trustworthy, we are building our life on a shaky foundation that could crumble at any time. When you take the Bible as one whole story you see the consistency of God’s character and his trustworthiness.

Matthew 7:24

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

We want to be wise men building on the sure rock of Jesus, who is never changing and always sovereign, loving us while we were still sinners, and desires to be in a relationship with us. Wow! That is so cool!

For some reason, we tend to want to trust ourselves and take matters into our own hands, even though we have so many previous life experiences that have taught us when we do that it never quite turns out right!

Trusting God is like walking out on a clear bridge; it feels like we will fall, but really we are more protected than ever!

Verse two teaches us to declare the truth and direct our thoughts and emotions that the Lord is our shelter and protection, we trust him and know him as our personal Lord and Savior. We walk out on that glass bridge knowing we are on a strong foundation.
