Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
Let’s talk about Psalm 19:7 and what it means for us as Christians, then we can draw it with my Draw for Bible Memory technique, and hide it in our hearts!
Laws and statutes have subtle differences, but for the sake of this post, we will cover them both as God’s rules outlined in scripture for us to live by.
God’s laws outline the behavior he expects from us to have a relationship with him. A perfect God cannot tolerate sin (breaking the law) because it is unacceptable to one who is perfectly just and righteous.
Think of it like oil and water. They simply do not mix and can’t be incorporated together.
Unfortunately, we humans were born into a sinful nature as descendants of Adam, who first sinned and ruined the chance to have a perfect relationship with God. Everyone after him pays the price for the sin he and Eve committed and we are all now sinners as well.
The laws of the Lord are perfect and trustworthy because God is perfect and trustworthy and nothing from him is ever in error. (Psalm 18:30 – As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.)
How can God’s laws be refreshing and make us wise if we have no chance whatsoever of following them? They require perfect behavior we can’t achieve.
The good news is that God’s laws point out his standard so we can clearly see we are unable to follow them, and that we need a savior who can follow them…all the way to the cross to pay the price for sin so we don’t have to!
You see the wages of sin is death! But God wants us to live with him forever, so he sent his Son, Jesus, to die in our place, our substitute!
So when we see God’s laws and statutes, we see his perfection, our flawed state, and the need for the grace and mercy of Jesus as our personal savior!
This is the good news that refreshes the soul and makes us wise when we accept the free gift of salvation.
We can trust this good news because the whole Bible reinforces God’s love for us and consistently tells us who Jesus is and what his plan for mankind is.
Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
